This is a story of star-crossed lovers. Once upon a time, there was a cowherd called Altair who was sitting under a tree and making beautiful music. The princess of the heavens, named Vega, heard his sweet voice and descended from the skies to sit with him a while. Of course, they fell in love and the princess would visit him as often as she could. No Vega's mother, the queen of the heavens, found out what her daughter was up to and reminded her that gods are not allowed to consort with mortals. She brought the princess home and forbad her ever to see the boy again. The Queen of the skies built the Milky Way to create a barrier between Vega and Altair. The princess was heartbroken. Her father, the God of the heavens, took pity on her. He offered that on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, each year, he would build her a bridge of magpies to cross the Milky Way so she could visit her Altair for a few hours. And so it is that in China, Korea and Japan on the seventh day of the seventh month, lovers meet to celebrate this romantic story. In China it is called Qixi and in Korea it is Chilseok, In Japan it is called Tanabata; During the 7th lunar month, look for the Summer Triangle of stars just above the horizon. there you can see Vega and Altair forming a triangle with Deneb. This painting from 2022, is about two star-crossed lovers, just like Vega and Altair.
